HISTORY OF GOD

Karen Armstrong 1993

The God of the Mystics

Page 250

"Perhaps the most famous of the early Jewish mystical texts is the fifth century Sefer Yezirah (The Book of Creation). There is no attempt to describe the creative process realistically; the account is unashamedly symbolic and shows God creating the world by means of language as though he were writing a book. But language has been entirely transformed and the message of creation is no longer clear. Each letter of the Hebrew alphabet is given a numerical value; by combining the letters with the sacred numbers, rearranging them in endless configurations, the mystic weaned his mind away from the normal connotations of words."

LIGHT AND LIFE

Lars Olof Bjorn 1976

Page 197

"By writing the 26 letters of the alphabet in a certain order one may put down almost any message (this book 'is written with the same letters' as the Encyclopaedia Britannica and Winnie the Pooh, only the order of the letters differs). In the same way Nature is able to convey with her language how a cell and a whole organism is to be constructed and how it is to function. Nature has succeeded better than we humans; for the genetic code there is only one universal language which is the same in a man, a bean plant and a bacterium."

A QUEST FOR THE BEGINNING AND THE END

Graham Hancock 1995

Chapter 32

Speaking to the Unborn

Page 285

"It is understandable that a huge range of myths from all over the ancient world should describe geological catastrophes in graphic detail. Mankind survived the horror of the last Ice Age, and the most plausible source for our enduring traditions of flooding and freezing, massive volcanism and devastating earthquakes is in the tumultuous upheavals unleashed during the great meltdown of 15,000 to 8000 BC. The final retreat of the ice sheets, and the consequent 300-400 foot rise in global sea levels, took place only a few thousand years before the beginning of the historical period. It is therefore not surprising that all our early civilizations should have retained vivid memories of the vast cataclysms that had terrified their forefathers.
Much harder to explain is the peculiar but distinctive way the myths of cataclysm seem to bear the intelligent imprint of a guiding hand.l Indeed the degree of convergence between such ancient stories is frequently remarkable enough to raise the suspicion that they must all have been 'written' by the same 'author'.
Could that author have had anything to do with the wondrous deity, or superhuman, spoken of in so many of the myths we have reviewed, who appears immediately after the world has been shattered by a horrifying geological catastrophe and brings comfort and the gifts of civilization to the shocked and demoralized survivors?
White and bearded, Osiris is the Egyptian manifestation of this / Page 286 / universal figure, and it may not be an accident that one of the first acts he is remembered for in myth is the abolition of cannibalism among the primitive inhabitants of the Nile Valley.2 Viracocha, in South America, was said to have begun his civilizing mission immediately after a great flood; Quetzalcoatl, the discoverer of maize, brought the benefits of crops, mathematics, astronomy and a refined culture to Mexico after the Fourth Sun had been overwhelmed by a destroying deluge.
Could these strange myths contain a record of encounters between scattered palaeolithic tribes which survived the last Ice Age and an as yet unidentified high civilization which passed through the same epoch?
And could the myths be attempts to communicate?

A message in the bottle of time

'Of all the other stupendous inventions,' Galileo once remarked,

what sublimity of mind must have been his who conceived how to communicate his most secret thoughts to any other person, though very distant either in time or place, speaking with those who are in the Indies, speaking to those who are not yet born, nor shall be this thousand or ten thousand years? And with no greater difficulty than the various arrangements of two dozen little signs on paper? Let this be the seal of all the admirable inventions of men.3

If the 'precessional message' identified by scholars like Santillana, von Dechend and Jane Sellers is indeed a deliberate attempt at communication by some lost civilization of antiquity, how come it wasn't just written down and left for us to find? Wouldn't that have been easier than encoding it in myths? Perhaps.
Nevertheless, suppose that whatever the message was written on got destroyed or worn away after many thousands of years? Or suppose that the language in which it was inscribed was later forgotten utterly (like the enigmatic Indus Valley script, which has been studied closely for more than half a century but has so far resisted all attempts at decoding)? It must be obvious that in such circumstances a written / Page 287 / legacy to the future would be of no value at all, because nobody would be able to make sense of it.
What one would look for, therefore, would be a universal language, the kind of language that would be comprehensible to any technologically advanced society in any epoch, even a thousand or ten thousand years into the future. Such languages are few and far between, but mathematics is one of them - and the city of Teotihuacan may be the calling-card of a lost civilization written in the eternal language of mathematics.
Geodetic data, related to the exact positioning of fixed geographical points and to the shape and size of the earth, would also remain valid and recognizable for tens of thousands of years, and might be most conveniently expressed by means of cartography (or in the construction of giant geodetic monuments like the Great Pyramid of Egypt, as we shall see).
Another 'constant' in our solar system is the language of time: the great but regular intervals of time calibrated by the inch-worm creep of precessional motion. Now, or ten thousand years in the future, a message that prints out numbers like 72 or 2160 or 4320 or 25,920 should be instantly intelligible to any civilization that has evolved a modest talent for mathematics and the ability to detect and measure the almost imperceptible reverse wobble that the sun appears to make along the ecliptic against the background of the fixed stars..."

"What one would look for, therefore, would be a universal language, the kind of language that would be comprehensible to any technologically advanced society in any epoch, even a thousand or ten thousand years into the future. Such languages are few and far between, but mathematics is one of them"

IN SEARCH OF ZARATHUSTRA

Paul Kriwaczek 1988

"The beautiful deathbed speech invented for Cyrus by Xenophon"

Page 183

"The everlasting God above, who beholds all things, with whom is all power, who upholds the order of this universe,

unmarred, unageing, unerring, unfathomable in beauty and in splendour, fear Him my sons, and never yield to sin or

wickedness, in thought, in word, or in deed. And after the Almighty, I would have you revere the whole race of man, as it

renews itself for ever; for God has not hidden you in the darkness, and your, deeds will be manifest in the eyes of all

mankind. If they be righteous and free from iniquity, they will blazen forth your power; but if you meditate evil against

each other you will forfeit the confidence of every man."

KEEPER OF GENESIS

A QUEST FOR THE HIDDEN LEGACY OF MANKIND

Robert Bauval Graham Hancock 1996

Page 254

"...Is there in any sense an interstellar

Rosetta Stone?

We believe there is a common language that all technical civilizations, no matter how different, must have.

That common language is science and mathematics.

The laws of Nature are the same everywhere:..."

FINGERPRINTS OF THE GODS

G Hancock 1995

Page 287
"What one would look for, therefore, would be a universal language, the kind of language that would be comprehensible to any technologically advanced society in any epoch, even a thousand or ten thousand years into the future. Such languages are few and far between, but mathematics is one of them - and the city of Teotihuacan may be the calling-card of a lost civilization written in the eternal language of mathematics."

"Of all the other stupendous inventions,' Galileo once remarked,
what sublimity of mind must have been his who conceived how to communicate his most secret thoughts to any other person, though very distant either in time or place, speaking with those who are in the Indies, speaking to those who are not yet born, nor shall be this thousand or ten thousand years? And with no greater difficulty than the various arrangements of two dozen little signs on paper? Let this be the seal of all the admirable inventions of men.3"

WHAT ONE WOULD LOOK FOR THEREFORE WOULD BE A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE

THE KIND OF LANGUAGE COMPREHENSIBLE TO ANY TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED SOCIETY

IN ANY EPOCH SUCH LANGUAGES ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN BUT MATHEMATICS IS ONE OF THEM

THE BOOK

ON THE TABOO AGAINST KNOWING WHO YOU ARE

Alan Watts 1969

Page 107

"But I define myself in terms of.you; I know myself only in terms of what is "other," no matter whether I see the "other" as below me or above me in any ladder of values. If above, I enjoy the kick of self-pity; if below, I enjoy the kick of pride. I being I goes with you being you. Thus, as a great Hassidic rabbi put it, "If I am I because you are you, and if you are you because I am I, then I am not I. and you are not you." Instead we are both something in common between what Martin Buber has called I-and-Thou and I-and-It-the magnet itself which / Page 108 / lies between the poles, between I myself and everything sensed as other."

Page 53 (Chapter 3)

"HOW TO BE A GENUINE FAKE"

"THE CAT has already been let out of the bag. The inside information is that yourself as "just little me" who "came into this world" and lives temporarily in a bag of skin is a hoax and a fake. The fact is that because no one thing or feature of this universe is separable from the whole, the only real You, or Self, is the whole. The rest of this book will attempt to make this so clear that you will not only understand the words but feel the fact. The first step is to understand, as vividly as possible, how the hoax begins.
We must first look at the form and behavior of the hoax itself. I have long been interested in trying to find out how people experience, or sense, their own existence-for what specific sensations do they use the word "I"?
Few people seem to use the word for their whole physical organism. "I have a body" is more common than "I am a body." We speak of "my" legs as we speak of "my" clothes, and "I" seems to remain intact even if the legs are amputated. We say, "I speak, I walk, I think, and (even) I breathe." But we do not say, "I shape my bones, I grow my nails, and I circulate my blood." We seem to use "I" for something in the body but not really of the body, for much of what goes on in the body seems to happen to. "I" in the same way as external events. "I" is used as the center of voluntary behavior and conscious atten tion, but not consistently. Breathing is only partially voluntary, and we say "I was sick" or "I dreamed" or "I fell asleep" as if the verbs were not passive but active."

THE SUFIS

Idries Shah 1977

Page 212

"The parent tribe of the Aniza are held by all Bedoin bards to be the Fakir ("humble in spirit") clan."

This appellation was adopted by dervishes, and in one of its deteriorations is applied to itinerant Hindu imatation yogis who auto anestheetize themselves and lie on sharp barbs, to no clearly ascertainable purpose;"

Page 283

"A distinguished Indian academician said "'Fakir' is confused with Hindu jugglers - and worse. I regard you not as a Fakir, but as a Man of the Path."

Putting the word into a phrase helps to establish the useage. "He is a dervish," means, a good, simple person, devoted to truth." "He is a Fakir," means, "one who struggles to improve himself, with hu-mility. "He is a Sufi," means, "one who follows the Sufi Way, also, "one who has attained progress in the Way"..."

In Sufism, the shortcomings of dictionary definitions are exposed perhaps more strikingly than in other fields. Thus Chambers' Dictionary (1955 edition)

DERVISH: A member of one of numerous Mohammedan frater-nities. . ."

SUFI: A pantheistic Mohammedan mystic. . ."

FAKIR: A religious (esp. Mohammedan) medicant, as-cetic

The meaning of the word "Mohammed"- or even "Mohammmedan" "fraternity," pantheism," " "mystic," "religion," "medicant," and "ascetic" are different in Eastern useage, and especially in Sufi application, than in English

PEACE BE UPON HIM

IN SEARCH OF ZARATHUSTRA

Paul Kriwaczek 1988

THE RELIGION OF LIGHT

99

"'Wisdom and deeds have always from time to time been thought to mankind by the messengers of God: Mani later wrote. 'So in one age they have been brought by the messenger called Buddha to India, in another by Zarathustra to Persia, in another by Jesus to the West. Thereupon this revelation has come down and this prophecy has appeared in the form of myself, Mani, the envoy of the true God in the Land of Babylon.'

What was the revelation and what the, prophesy? In Manichaeism, his useful survey and summary of the Mani phenomenon both West and East, Samuel Lieu of the University of Warwick quotes a Chinese Mariichaean handbook:"

"Everyone who wishes to join the sect must know that Light and Darkness are principles, each in their own right and that their natures are completely distinct... Next he must be enlightened on the Three Moments: the Former Time, the Present Time, the Future Time.
In the Former Thne, there are yet no heavens or earths, there exists only Light and Darkness. The nature of Light is wisdom, that of Darkness is folly. . .
In the Present Time, Darkness invades Light and gives rein to its passion to chase the Light away. Light in turn enters Darkness and is deputed with pledges to push back this Great Calamity. It detests its departure from its original body and pleads to leave the Fiery Abode. One must therefore wear out the physical body in order to save its [luminous] nature. . .
In the Future Time. . . Light once more belongs to the Great Light and Darkness returns to the ultimate Darkness. These Two Principles return to their normal state and give up and return to each other what they have received from each other.
'This drama; says Dr Lieu, 'is central to Mani's teaching as it explains how the enlightened souls of men which are of divine origin came to be clothed in the body of matter which is evil.'

Good and evil, lightness and darkness, soul and body, such is the dualist division in the Manichaean universe.
Zoroastrians and others before Mani - for instance the Jewish Hellenist philosopher Philo Judaeus, or the authors of one of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the library of Jewish texts secreted in a cave in the Holy Landcaround the start of the first millennium - had seen light and darkness as useful metaphors for, or realisations of, Zarathustra's good and evil powers. But Mani went further. His light was no analogy but was intended to be understood as literally and materially true. It was one of the complaints of later critics that Manichaeans insisted on the reality of their fantastical interpretation of physical phenomena. A sixth-century philosopher, Simplicius, loudly complained about their excessive literalism. Their explanation of eclipses particularly offended him.
'They say that when the Evil ones chained in creation cause upheaval and disorder by their own movements, the light particles inside them throw up a kind of veil so as not to be affected by the excitement. Eclipses are therefore caused by the interposition of this veil.'
Simplicius shakes his head in despair: 'They fabricate certain marvels which are not even worthy to be called myths. But they do not use them /Page 101 /
as myths, nor do they think that they have any other meaning, but believe that all the things which they say are true.'
For Mani, it was real, visible light and actual, literal darkness which made the world their battleground. This was what made his inspiration unique.
Pondering how much of his theology was developed here in Afghanistan, I turned to the Encyclopcedia Britannica to check the valley's physical location. It struck me that, as it lies more than 8,000 feet above sea level, the clarity of its air and the dualism of its blazing summers and crackling winters might have made some contribution to the prophet's thought.
'The Buddhist art of central Afghanistan is admirably represented at Bamian: I read, 'where Mani, the Iranian founder of the Manichaean religion, probably lived and encouraged the growth of a religious pictorial art in the 3rd century AD.'
And then I realised it: Mani was a painter. Manichaeism's battle between the light and the darkness is a painter's vision. Caravaggio, who said 'Painting is light' would have understood, so would de La Tour, Cezanne and every other artist who ever strove to create a world by the interplay of chiaroscuro, brightness and shadow. So would Germany's greatest poet Goethe, who had wanted to be a painter in his youth and who opposed Newton's mechanistic theory of light with his own explanation, because of his passionate conviction that light is indivisible and cannot be reduced to a procession of particles. Manichaeism was fine art raised to the status of revealed religion - unique in spiritual history.
",
The texts give no idea of how long Mani remained in Afghanistan. He certainly travelled on to India, and maybe China, at some time in these early years of his mission, founding communities of followers that long outlived him. The texts tell us only tall tales. Somewhere in Turan, in Central Asia, he was directed by the king to debate his metaphysics with a local holy man. To impress the king with his powers of levitation, he lifted his opponent into mid-air. The king was so overcome by the profundity of the argument, let alone the ability to make a holy man hover above the floor, that he converted with all his court.
One aspect of the tale does ring true, however. Mani had very acute strategic instincts. Unlike the Jesus of the Gospels who addressed himself to the poor and to the powerless, Mani always directed his attentions first to the ruling class, starting with the local Shah and working his way up. His aim from the start was plain: to target the greatest ruler of the region and of the age, Shapur I, Shahanshah of Iran and Non-Iran (the non / Page 101 /Persian lands of his empire) who had taken the throne when the prophet of light was twenty eight years old."

TWO CHORUSES FROM 'THE ROCK'

"...W'e build the meaning:

A Church for all And a job for each

Each man to his work.

You have seen the house built, you have seen it adorned

By one who came in the night, it is now dedicated to

GOD.

It is now a visible church, one more light set on a hill

In a world confused and dark and disturbed by portents

of fear.

And what shall we say of the future? Is one church all

we can build?

Or shall the Visible Church go on to conquer the World?

The great snake lies ever half awake, at the bottom of

the pit of the world, curled

In folds of himself until he awakens in hunger and mov-

ing his head to right and to left prepares for his hour

to devour.

But the Mystery of Iniquity is a pit too deep for mortal

eyes to plumb. Come

Ye out from among those who prize the serpent's golden

eyes,

The worshippers, self-given sacrifice of the snake. Take

Your way and be ye separate.

Be not too curious of Good and Evil;

Seek not to count the future waves of Time;

But be ye satisfied that you have light

Enough to take your step and find your foothold.

O Light Invisible, we praise Thee!

Too bright for mortal vision.

O Greater Light, we praise Thee for the less;

The eastern light our spires touch at morning,

The light that slants upon our western doors at evening,

The twilight over stagnant pools at batflight,

Moon light and star light, owl and moth light,

Glow-worm glowlight on a grassblade.

O Light Invisible, we worship Thee!

We thank Thee for the lights that we have kindled,

The light of altar and of sanctuary;

Small lights of those who meditate at midnight

And lights directed through the coloured panes of win-

dows

And light reflected from the polished stone,

The gilded carven wood, the coloured fresco.

Our gaze is submarine, our eyes look upward

And see the light that fractures through unquiet water.

We see the light but see not whence it comes.

O Light Invisible, we glorify Thee!

In our rhytbm of earthly life we tire of light. We are glad

when the day ends, when the play ends; and ecstasy is too much pain.

We are children quickly tired: children who are up in the

night

and fall asleep as the rocket is fired; and the

day is long for work or play.

We tire of distraction or concentration, owe sleep and are

glad to sleep,

Controlled by the rhythm of blood and the day and the

night and the seasons.

And we must extinguish the candle, put out the light and

relight it;

Forever must quench, forever relight the flame.

Therefore we thank Thee for our little light, that is

dappled with shadow.

We thank Thee who hast moved us to building, to find

ing, to forming at the ends of our fingers and beams

of our eyes.

And when we have built an altar to the Invisible Light,

we may set thereon the little lights for which our

bodily vision is made.

And we thank Thee that darkness reminds us of light.

O Light Invisible, we give Thee thanks for Thy great

glory!

JOURNEY OF THE MAGI

"...All this was a long time ago, I remember,

And I would do it again, but set down

This set down

This: were we led all that way for

Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly,

We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and

death,

But had thought they were different; this Birth was

Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.

We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,

But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,

With an alien people clutching their gods.

I should be glad of another death."
